In this year's Nursery World student essay competition, we asked participants to write on the theme of 'working with parents'. Here we reprint in full the winning entry, with extracts from the two runners-up 1st prize - 1,000

Lesley is studying for the Open University Certificate in Early Years Practice

'Thank you so much for helping Callum enjoy school, Mrs Parratt. I really appreciate it.' (Callum is a reception class pupil.) The above heart-warming comment was made recently to me at a parent-teachers' association fun night. Yes, I thought to myself, that's what it's all about. If we can engage with parents or the children's carers, we are heading in the right direction towards partnership. However, I argue that partnership - real partnership (where parents are seen as equal and not just involved) - is in its infancy.
