Recent media coverage and numerous reports, including Ofsted's Food for Thought, have flagged up results that those of us working in early years settings have always suspected. These include the startling fact that while most providers are aware of what constitutes a healthy, balanced and nutritious diet, children are not always offered what they need.
For example, in a survey of 200 nurseries, Leeds University's Centre for Research in Primary Care calculated that only 46 per cent provided a fresh fruit or vegetable with each main meal.
