This has been heralded as the most significant piece of new law in over 30 years.

On 1 October 2006, the Employment Equality (Age) Regulations 2006 (also known as 'the Age Regulations') came into effect in the UK. This has been heralded as the most significant piece of new law in over 30 years.

Individuals will now, in addition to the protection they already enjoy from discrimination on the grounds of disability, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and belief, also be protected from discrimination on the basis of age.

In spite of the publicity the Age Regulations have generated, few nurseries appear to have taken steps to prepare for their implementation. The DTI estimates that there may be as many as 8,000 age-discrimination tribunal cases next year, so there is no room for employers to be complacent.
