Letters: Deserving students?

While I understand from Louise Masterson's own admission that she does not come from a childcare background, I was still taken aback at her comments that her fellow students are on placement at a children's centre ('Study days', 9/16 August).

She said, 'While taking placements at private day nurseries is good, it is important to bear in mind that initially the main scope for employment will be in the public sector'. I agree that this is likely. But I was appalled when she said, 'I accept that for this year, the six-week summer break is a luxury I will have to live without.'

I am sure Ms Masterson's comments weren't meant to cause offence, but unfortunately many early years staff do not have the luxury of six weeks off! And in my experience, nor do many teaching staff.

The government and local authorities overall should build upon and foster good working relationships with PVI providers. This is certainly the case with Northumberland County Council's Sure Start department, where staff have worked to establish, develop and maintain positive working relationships with what is an extremely vast rural county.
