Letters: In defence of the NVQ

What a shame that the writer of 'Does Ofsted get the full picture?' (Letters, 6 September) has such a poor experience of NVQ training at levels 2 and 3. My colleague and I were horrified to hear of the NVQ assessor's appalling practice. One has to wonder how a self-respecting assessor could make an objective judgement regarding the competency of the learners in the manner described.

As a provider of the Apprenticeship Frameworks in Children's Care, Learning and Development, we give our learners extensive support in the classroom to gain the underpinning knowledge for the NVQ.

At our recent inspection, Chiltern Training was awarded a high grade for teaching and learning. Rigorous interviews of students, assessors and managers were carried out in the workplaces during this time, but our internal verifiers carry out regular monitoring of assessment procedures as a matter of course.

We are not surprised, but saddened at the letter writer's opinion of NVQs as a result of the experience described. But what a shame that this route has received a 'bad press' once again. The NVQ route, if delivered well, can provide learners with a fantastic grounding in both theoretical and practical aspects of childcare.
