George Flies South

by Simon James, Walker Books, hardback, 11.99

Winter is coming and it’s time for baby bird George and his mum to head south, but first George must learn to fly. Disaster looms when a strong gust of wind scoops George and his nest in to the air and on to the roof of a car, then a boat and finally on to a pile of wood which is hoisted to the top of a building site. What next for poor little George?

Children cannot fail to be engrossed by this tense little tale. As with much of James’s work, full-page images alternate with sequences of pictures that add detail and depth to the story, and while the palette may be typically pastel, the story is full of suspense. As with all good ‘thrillers’, a baddie emerges on the top of a multi-storey building (in this instance, a cat), causing the hero to tumble from the roof and hurtle towards the street below. Who will save George now?
