The Psychology of Reading: Theory and Applications

By Paula J. Schwanenflugel and Nancy Flanagan Knapp (Guildford Press, $32.30)

An authoritative text explaining the psychological processes involved in reading, with applications for educational practice. Not all will be strictly relevant for the early years practitioner, but as the book follows a clear developmental sequence, from the impact of the early family environment to the acquisition of emergent literacy skills, it is a useful text to dip into, while later information on the increasingly complex abilities required for word recognition, reading fluency, vocabulary growth and text comprehension still provide useful context.

A technology toolbox features an exploration of the pros and cons of computer-assisted learning. This is aimed at a US audience and links to the US national curriculum.
