- How did it feel to win a NIACE (National Institute for AdultContinuing Education) award?

I was stunned. It was totally unexpected. I was really proud.

- What makes you want to study and work in childcare?

I do voluntary work in many aspects of childcare including Home Start, alocal toddler group and children's activities at the Doncaster DeafCommunity Centre. My eyes have to be my ears, and I lip-read.

- What was it like to take the course in British Sign Language?

I regarded it as a challenge because of my own special need, as I amprofoundly deaf. My work placement was at the deaf community centre. This enabled me to gain valuable bilingual experience in my own languageand second-language English through planning activities for both deafand hearing children. The theory side to the course was more difficultand demanding, and very time-consuming. Some technical words I had neverheard of, but now I know the meanings and BSL signs.
