A Unique Child: Nutrition - On track

Early years settings in deprived areas of Bedfordshire are benefiting from a unique service offering training and support from a team of health professionals on good nutrition and oral health.

Head chef Karl Finnerty has just finished putting together the latest batch of menus for the 100 children that he cooks for daily at Chapel Street Nursery and Children's Centre in Luton. Later, he will send them off to be approved by a team of public health dietitians, in Bedfordshire, and await an unannounced visit to audit his work against a set of nutritional standards within a countywide award scheme.

This setting is one of 43 PVI and maintained settings in Luton that are working towards achieving the Healthy Under Fives award, a rolling public health initiative that sees settings rewarded for their commitment to providing children with a healthy environment surrounding food, oral health and physical activity.
