Nursery Activities: Sitting comfortably

Practice
Use a story about a family's sofa as the basis for a project to make children feel at home in role play and construction activities suggested by Jean Evans.

A perfect story to motivate play is Our Big Blue Sofa by Tim Hopgood (Macmillan, £5.99). The two main characters, Jessy and her brother Tom, along with their two cats, Inky and Binky, enjoy amazing adventures on their big blue sofa.

One day they are underwater explorers on a big blue submarine, the next they are flying high above the clouds in a big blue hot air balloon. Sometimes they travel by big blue taxicab and sometimes they bounce on a big blue trampoline. Then, one day, the big blue sofa breaks and a brand new sofa arrives!

This engaging story offers an excellent starting point for a project in which children can create fantasy worlds using familiar objects and so enrich developing imaginations.
