Practical Management Part 3: Staff Training and CPD - Keeping one step ahead of change

The best training anticipates change and contributes to a nursery's continuing development. Auditing training and identifying appropriate courses should be part of the CPD cycle, say Des Forrest and Kathy Brodie.

Staff training should be considered from the point of induction. During the induction interview the current level of qualifications, types of training and when it was completed should be recorded. Original certificates should be produced, and photocopied if required. This forms the baseline of the training process and the beginning of the audit trail. It is advisable to keep a summary sheet in the front of the training folder, with the training completed by every member of staff listed in chronological order.

Training that should be renewed at regular, pre-determined intervals - or which in other words 'expires' - should be kept as a separate record in the risk assessment file as well. This ensures that it will be checked every six to eight weeks as part of the risk assessment routine. Another method is to computerise the system to electronically flag up when there is a member of staff who is likely to need some training or CPD and the date when this has to be completed.
