Work Matters: Leadership - Bonding with parents

Management
George Perkins Day Nursery in Birmingham enjoyed a healthy turnout of parents when it presented an open evening on the EYFS. Parents were impressed with the efforts of staff to engage the children in a diverse range of activities, says manager Sarah Presswood.

At our recent EYFS training day we felt we really wanted to get the parents on board with our delivery of the framework. I suggested an open evening - we had had one for 'Birth to Three' which had been successful and the staff were really enthusiastic.

I started by asking parents if they were interested in such an event, and we were disappointed when only a handful replied. We decided to go ahead but to include a creche and refreshments.

Then I had to allocate tasks to the staff. This was easy - they were enthusiastic, wanting to showcase all they do at nursery. I tried to work to their strengths and interests. Two staff had just been on training for 'outdoor learning' and they were keen to engage parents in their plans for extending the garden as an enabling environment. Another has an interest in ICT. A couple of the younger ones were keen to run the creche.
