Work Matters: Leadership - Staying hands-on

Management
Putting aside time to spend with the children is vital for maintaining the right perspective on the job, says Sarah Presswood, manager of George Perkins Day Nursery in Birmingham.

One of my biggest challenges as a nursery manager is constantly juggling the many demands on my time. There are always administration and financial issues, staff with questions, parents with questions, and prospective parents to talk to and show around nursery. Dealing with all these means that there never seems to be enough time to spend with the children, and yet they are the reason that I do my job.

It is good to hold on to this fact and sometimes when all these other demands seem overwhelming, I refresh myself with spending time reading to the pre-schoolers, playing with the toddlers or singing nursery rhymes to the babies.
