4Children calls for changes to tax credits

The charity 4Children is calling for the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit to be removed and a new scheme to be put into place to pay for childcare, in its manifesto for the upcoming general election.

The manifesto, A Vote for Children and Families 2010, calls for more support to be offered for working parents, including looking at ways for childcare providers to offer more flexible care for parents, providing fully flexible provision of free places for threeand four-year-olds, and better advice and practical help for parents looking for work and finding childcare.

Other proposed measures include extending Sure Start Children's Centres to cater for primary and secondary school children, ensuring that public services meet the needs of families, tackling child poverty and improving neighbourhoods and building family-friendly communities.
