6m for childcare across Scotland

Childcare provision across Scotland has been awarded nearly 6m in grants from the New Opportunities Fund. The grants will benefit 48 projects including childminding and out-of-school care, as well as breakfast and holiday clubs, and create around 6,800 new childcare places.

The grants will benefit 48 projects including childminding and out-of-school care, as well as breakfast and holiday clubs, and create around 6,800 new childcare places.

One beneficiary is Fife, where out-of-school hours childcare is to receive 1.8m, creating 6,000 places. New Oppor- tunities Fund director for Scotland Beverly Francis said, 'In deprived and disadvantaged areas, reliable out-of-school care helps lift families out of poverty by supporting parents to get back into work or to take up new training opportunities.'

Janet Law, national policy officer with the Scottish Out-of-School Care Network, added, 'The network has been working closely with the New Opportunities Fund and it continues to be the main source of new funding.
