Food allergies seem to be on the increase. At our nursery we have many children with allergies to dairy, wheat, nuts, sweet potato and egg - this last being life-threatening for one child.

The parent of this child would prefer us to use a plastic birthday cake for the children's parties (they can bring one in but can't eat it). The children can go through the ritual of singing and blowing out the candles on the plastic cake but can't have a piece of cake. This is just in case another child in our care is allergic to something in the cake and we are not aware of this, or so this parent suggests. He also recommends that we do not accept a home-baked cake that the parent of the birthday child has made, as we do not know what is in it.
