There is little doubt that the Early Years Foundation Stage provides a single coherent framework that will help to raise quality in early years settings. As such, it is a positive development for the sector.
But is it too prescriptive to encourage the innovative practice which treats each child as an individual? That is the question causing concern among members of the Early Childhood Forum, the coalition of early years organisations serviced by NCB. It could be argued that the framework reads more like a manual than a description of what practitioners must provide by law to ensure that young children have rich experiences in environments that support them in fulfilling their potential.
