Managers should be honest and not indulge in creative writing when it comes to staff references, says Mairi Maciver Clark

If only picking a member of staff came as easily as Little Jack Horner's plum! References can sing praises that don't always come to fruition. There was a dainty dish whose reference read:

Mary had a little lamb, Its fleece was white as snow, And everywhere that Mary went The lamb was sure to go.

By the end of the first week it should have read:

'Mary had great big dog, His coat as black as night, And everywhere that Mary went, Did the dog not go and bite!'
