Be ruthless about regime in your workload, says Mairi Maciver Clark

Time is a nursery manager's most precious commodity. During our daily work we deal with time thieves in various guises - information and paperwork overload, the surprise siege of inspectors, the telephone's trilling demands, and queries from anxious parents or staff.

Could this be an extract from your diary?:

* A good start - got dressed, put on make-up and located matching shoes.

* On arrival at work, get invoices out, return phone calls, reply to parents' letters, meet prospective parent customers and prepare for a partnership meeting.

* Interrupted by a staff member whose neighbour's granny needs her dog taking to the vet. Extra time spent with a parent who shares her operation details - do we know if her child will suffer the same problem?
