It's important for managers and staff alike to understand maternity rights, says Mairi Maciver Clark.

Just when you think that you've pulled together a strong and coherent staff team, there's a knock on your office door. That slightly odd behaviour you'd picked up from Millie over the past few days, combined with regular bathroom visits, is to be confirmed. She's pregnant.

A serious shortage of men in our profession means that this is a common scenario for us all. Fellow nursery managers have encountered many pregnancy issues over the years:

* 'Claire's mum phoned the nursery one Monday to say she was ill. When asked what was wrong, she revealed that Claire had given birth during the weekend.'
