A time to celebrate

It's my great pleasure as a working father to welcome you to the launch of the first-ever National Childcare Month. Today's event kicks off the biggest-ever celebration of childcare across the UK.

In June there are literally thousands of activities taking place across the country from Aberdeen to Cornwall . I'm also told that an event is taking place in Gambia, so perhaps next year we'll see World Childcare Month. Not surprisingly, some events have Jubilee or football themes; many others are pure celebrations of childcare led by childcarers, out-of-school clubs, nurseries and playgroups.

And there's a lot to celebrate. National Childcare Month is a great chance to bang the drum for all that's good and new in childcare, to let families know what's available in their area and to involve a wide range of people in local activities. It is also an opportunity to thank everyone who works in childcare, and hopefully to encourage more people to become childcare workers.
