All those working in children's services need to be aware of legislation to ensure that they are working to the standards set in law. The following areas of policy and legislation are of particular importance: Disability Discrimination Act (1995)

Disability Discrimination Act (1995)

From September 2002 the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 applies to all providers of early years services. A booklet, Early years and the Disability Discrimination Act 1995: what service providers need to know is available from the National Children's Bureau website (www.ncb.org.uk).

The booklet offers a breakdown of the duties and answers many questions faced by practitioners and parents alike. For example, What are 'reasonable adjustments'? Who is responsible for ensuring a disabled child is not discriminated against? There is also a section providing points of contact for advice on meeting the duties.
