Last week NICE published guidance to address disparities in nutrition between low-income families and those who are better off. They include recommendations for the delivery of services by professionals including health visitors, nursery nurses and children's centre workers.
The Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association said the guidance provided further evidence of the crucial role of health visitors in child welfare.
Unite/CPHVA professional officer Dave Mundy said, 'This is as clear an endorsement as you can get about the need for a universal - not a patchwork - health visiting service, which can give vital support to mothers and children in the early stages of development. The need for more trained health visitors is paramount.'
