All change

While Richard Ashton acknowledges that the plastering trade is well paid and highly skilled, he has no regrets about throwing in the trowel for childcare.

Mr Ashton had never had any doubts that he wanted to work with children and on leaving school he began to work towards an NVQ 2 in Childcare and Education. At this time he also gained experience working in the creche at the Bluewater shopping centre and loved every minute of it.

However, when his father hurt his arm and was temporarily unable to ply his trade as a plasterer, Mr Ashton stepped in to help. 'I did it to help my family out and I began to learn the trade. My father recovered pretty quickly but I carried on working with him and also did some labouring work for his company.'
