All staff need this training

The Government's new workforce strategy sets out an ambitious vision for the children's workforce. Integrated training and qualifications will be at the heart of the strategy, which will support plans to establish children's centres for pre-school children within a wider context of all schools being extended schools. An integrated training and qualification scheme will soon be underway after a successful pilot. Run by the National College of School Leadership, it is a crucial building block in developing integrated leadership in children's centres. More developments of this kind are essential if we are to encompass all those working with children and young people in extended schools - including childcare, study support, health and family support.

More developments of this kind are essential if we are to encompass all those working with children and young people in extended schools - including childcare, study support, health and family support.

However, while developments in integrated management and leadership are clearly a priority, training and qualifications for integrated working are needed for all childcare and out-of-school workers. Although children's centres are headline news, up to 80 per cent of childcare for the under-fives will be delivered in other settings.
