The RSPCA offers the following safety guidelines: * Never approach a strange dog.

* Never approach a strange dog.

* Always ask permission from the owner before stroking a dog on a lead. Not all dogs are gentle and friendly.

* Never tease or disturb a dog that is eating or sleeping.

* Don't leave young children alone with a dog - the temptation to pull its tail may prove too much.

* Teach children never to put their faces close to an animal's face or claws, and not to stare into a dog's eyes.

* Point out to children that some animals are easily startled by high-pitched screams or sudden, loud noises.
