Assess your setting's practice

Ask yourself these ten questions to assess whether your setting helps children who speak English as an additional language. 1 Can you see languages other than English as soon as you enter your setting?

2 Are children carefully grouped at set times? Those who speak the same home language can support each other at mealtimes or storytime, for example.

3 Can all the adults pronounce all the children's names correctly?

4 Do staff use clear, simple English? It is important not to overwhelm a child with too many words all at once, but don't use broken English or speak unnaturally loudly.

5 Are children expected to say 'please' or 'thank you' before they take things? Many languages have no equivalent words, and the children will be used to taking things as a matter of course - they are not being rude. Adults can provide a model for using these words.
