Bairns get flavour of Burns at traditional family evening

Around 20 children and their parents enjoyed a 'Burns for Bairns' evening in Banchory, Aberdeenshire. The Burns' Night event last Sunday at the Tor-na-Coille Hotel was the idea of the hotel's owner, Roxanne Maris. Children aged from three to 13 and their parents were served cocktails of Irn Bru before chef Ian McDonald presented them with a haggis that was piped in by Ms Maris' son, Marinus.

Most of the children took part in the entertainment by reciting poems, singing songs or dancing. A rocking horse was pressed into service for 'Tam o' Shanter'.

Hotel spokeswoman Diane Henderson said, 'The children were amused and entertained by our scaled-down version of Burns Night, which helped them to appreciate his life and work.'

Mr Mellis said, 'We wanted to introduce the children to Burns.' He told the children about Robert Burns' life as a child and gave them a simple, fun quiz.

As a memento, each youngster received a children's version of 'Tam o'

Shanter'.
