Bid to allay fear of qualifications list

Childcare staff in England have been told 'not to panic' following the compilation of a list of 'historic' childcare qualifications to assist Ofsted inspectors when they visit early years settings. Some staff in day nurseries and pre-schools fear that if their qualifications do not appear on the list, they may no longer be recognised as qualified.

Some staff in day nurseries and pre-schools fear that if their qualifications do not appear on the list, they may no longer be recognised as qualified.

The list of about 200 recognised childcare qualifications was compiled earlier this year by the Early Years National Training Organisation (EYNTO) for the Department for Education and Skills (DfES). It includes qualifications for work as a manager, supervisor, childcare worker, assistant childcare worker, person working with babies, out-of-school worker and open-access playscheme worker.

Savita Ayling, EYNTO chief executive, explained that the list was for guidance only and was not legislative. She said, 'The list is not intended to intimidate the sector. It has been drawn from all the awarding bodies, including CACHE, Edexcel, SPRITO and Montessori. It is not exhaustive or definitive. Just because a qualification isn't on the list doesn't mean it's not valid.'
