The 24-Hour Family by Polly Ghazi (9.99, The Women's Press) is billed as 'A Parent's Guide to Work-Life Balance', and would be a very good reference source to have on your entrance hall table as well as in the staff room. The book deals with everything from the details of working families' tax credit to the issues involved in achieving a work-life balance in rural families, low-income and lone parents, black and Asian parents and parents with disabilities or disabled children. The book also takes an in-depth look at what children want within their families and from the childcare they receive, and gives some interesting case studies. * Telephone 020 7251 3007

Anyone who's worked in childcare for any length of time will be familiar with the character of Mog, created by Judith Kerr, and the star of a dozen appealing books for younger children that have spanned more than three decades. Now we are to see the last of Mog in Goodbye Mog (Collins, 9.99).

a touching story in which the old cat dies and the family has to come to terms with the loss of their pet and eventually get another cat. Despite its subject, the story manages to be very positive about a difficult area.

The first Topsy & Tim book, written by Jean and Gareth Adamson, was published in 1960, and since then the series has sold more than 21 million copies. Illustrating styles may have changed over the years, but the books manage to retain their popularity due to the fact they deal with everyday situations that young children have to face and are sometimes worried about. This month, a selection of the 130 Topsy & Tim titles available is to be republished with updated illustrations and covers to 'create a more contemporary feel'. Look out for Topsy and Tim Start School, Topsy and Tim and the New Baby and Topsy and Tim Learn to Swim, among others. Priced 1.99 from Ladybird in mini hardback.
