Budget 2012: Extra support for service families

Families of military personnel are to benefit from an extra 2 million a year, under new measures announced by the Chancellor George Osborne in today's budget.
The chancellor’s proposal will see the Families Welfare Grant, which provides support to families of service personnel deployed on operations, doubled from £2.20 per person per week to £4.40 as of next month.

The grant benefits over 30,000 families per year, with around 15,000 personnel deployed at any one time.
Commanding Officers or their representatives can claim the money for each of their deployed service personnel and determine how to spend the money to support families left behind.

This can include paying for internet connections or organising activities for families such as coffee mornings, briefings or trips.

A spokesperson for the Army Families Federation said, ‘We are delighted that the Families Welfare Grant has been doubled as it means more support to families of service personnel.’
