The National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) is inviting applications from early years providers to take part in an evaluative study of their Maths Champions programme to measure its impact on children’s attainment.

The programme aims to improve the maths skills of children in early years settings by training and supporting ‘Maths Champions’ within nurseries.

NDNA are seeking to recruit 138 early years providers to take part in the study, which is funded by the Education Endowment Foundation and the Department for Education.

The study is part of a randomised control trial, which means 69 settings will be randomly selected to receive the £400 Maths Champions programme for free.

The other 69 successful applicants will form part of the control group, while both groups will receive £500 for their contribution to the study.

Participating settings will nominate a practitioner to be their Maths Champion who is either a graduate or Level 3 in early years leading practice in the setting, and a Deputy Maths Champion qualified to a minimum of Level 3.

The trial is open to private, voluntary and independent providers in England based on non-domestic premises, maintained or school based nurseries providing provision for three- and four-year-olds, and will commence in October 2020.

Stella Ziolkowski, NDNA’s director of quality and training, said, ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for early years settings to get involved with our Maths Champions programme.

‘Prior to a pilot that is being carried out between January and June this year, we worked closely with maths expert Sue Gifford to review the resources and training making the programme up to date with research-based best practice.’
