Calling their bluff

I was delighted to read the letter from Victoria Openshaw of the Worcestershire Childminding Association (29 March). I have also been following the ongoing correspondence on Nursery World's letters page over the past few months.

My 'snide aside' was written in the hope that it would stir up exactly this response. I am not angry at childminders, but I am curious as to how it is possible that a Government purporting to be concerned with child protection issues can even contemplate any situation whereby smacking and smoking in front of children is allowed, even with parental consent.

Also, thank you so much for the editor's note at the bottom of yet another letter responding to my initial comment (5 April), as I have a terrible feeling there will be a price on my head soon!
