Case study

Tessa is nanny to five-year-old twins Sally and Michael. The family, fully supported by Tessa, has wanted to promote honesty. Recently an issue has arisen - should you fudge the truth a bit in order to be kind to someone? Sally's best friend had a very short haircut and Sally was honest when asked, saying, 'I like your old hair best'. Her friend became tearful and Sally was told off by her teacher for being unkind. In a conversation over the tea table, Michael recalls that Tessa was not truthful about the book that another nanny had lent her. He says, 'You told her you liked the book but I heard you say to Mum you weren't keen.' The teatime conversation circles around troubles that can come from being honest or dishonest, since Tessa has now been lent another book and there are five more to come in the series!
