Conference tackles training needs

Margaret Hodge will be speaking on the importance of play in relation to the new Government Green Paper at a conference to be held in London next week, reports Nicole Curnow. Professionals in Play, organised by the Playwork Unit in SkillsActive (formerly SPRITO), will look at how Government and key organisations are developing approaches to support playworkers though better training and recognised qualifications.

Margaret Hodge, the new Minister of State for Children, will introduce the new Green Paper, Every Child Matters, and talk about the Government's hopes for future workforce reform.

The task of qualifying the workforce is huge - it is estimated that 100,000 playworkers are needed over the next five years, based on Government targets. However, few colleges provide training and Ofsted inspectors are concerned about settings meeting Daycare Standards.
