Last week the Northern Ireland branch of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) said they wanted to see all people who work with children be vetted because of the need to tackle child abuse on an all-Ireland basis and give all children equal protection under the law. At present childcarers are vetted only in Northern Ireland and there is no equivalent system in the south.
NSPCC regional director Lynne Peyton said, 'Currently there are no mechanisms for organisations in the Irish Republic to access the Department of Health and Social Services and Public Safety's Pre-Employment Consultancy Register (PECS). We urgently need to see common standards and processes applied, particularly where there is such fluid movement of personnel from both parts of the island.'
