Nursery World - Cuts threaten an end to London Play

A voluntary organisation that promotes inclusive play opportunities for children across London is fighting closure because of funding cuts under the London Councils' grant scheme (News, 12 October). London Play has written to political party leaders and the capital's 33 council leaders asking for support. London Councils' grant committee has said that increasing access to play and physical activity for children and young people should no longer be a funding priority.

London Play director Dr Ute Navidi said this 'would mean the end of London Play'. She said, 'We, our member organisations, professionals, parents and children and young people, cannot comprehend why London Councils would want to withdraw its funding. Having to campaign for our survival rather than getting on with the job of developing quality, accessible play opportunities for children and supporting the play sector in London is a real yet unfortunate diversion.'
