Don't rush training

I have read with interest the recent reports in Nursery World regarding NVQ assessment. We are a small community-based training provider. The initial draw-down figure to start a candidate, through some Government funding streams, would not cover our costs.

We are a small community-based training provider. The initial draw-down figure to start a candidate, through some Government funding streams, would not cover our costs.

Our main concern at present is the funding streams which are putting enormous pressure on assessors and candidates to complete within a very short timescale. Because of this, assessors are being lost.

Training providers also need time to deliver training before and during the assessment process. Candidates need to be trained and developed, not just qualified.

We are also concerned that the speed of assessment would dilute quality.

Therefore, we have decided to continue directing our candidates to access funding from Sure Start's childcare grant administered by our EYDCP. This year the grant was released and completely used up in April. For the first time in a number of years, we find ourselves in the position of assessors with assessment places to fill.
