Doubts voiced over 'home childcarers'

Early years organisations have welcomed the Government's 'home childcarer' proposals but criticised the initiative for excluding nannies.

The organisations were responding to a Government consultation in England, which ended on 31 August. The scheme, due to be introduced nationwide from next April, would allow registered childminders to become 'home childcarers' looking after children in their parents' home, with some of the fees met under the childcare tax credit element of Working Families Tax Credit.

Gill Haynes, chief executive of the National Childminding Association, said, 'We are pleased the contribution childminders make is recognised in this extension of childcare in the home.' However, she said the NCMA was concerned that the Government still allowed childminders in England to smack children and to smoke in their presence with parental permission.
