Early years flagship could hit the rocks

I am disappointed and concerned about the proposed budget cuts to be made in the London borough of Hounslow (News, 7 February). As a nursery nurse I work alongside a newly-qualified teacher in a reception class with 30 children. We play a vital role in the child's entry into the school cycle, giving children support and assisting the teachers. As I understand it, Hounslow has received the fourth lowest budget settlement in Greater London, resulting in a 11.5m shortfall. Hounslow has in the past prided itself on supporting children in the early years and has been a flagship for this provision. It will be a shame if it decides to proceed with these cuts. It will be down to individual schools to decide how to spend their budgets when they receive them. I believe that Unison is holding meetings with the council this week. In our school we have asked parents to write to the local councillors if they feel these cuts would harm their child's education.
