Eat a healthier diet

Early years professionals who are concerned about the need for children to eat a healthier diet and the way foods are being promoted to them through advertising on TV and in magazines have been invited to respond to a consultation by the Food Standards Agency. Topics covered by the consultation include developing guidelines for the food industry on reducing amounts of fat, salt and sugar in products specifically aimed at children, and agreeing guidelines on the labelling of these products to enable consumers to identify healthier options more easily; working with schools to push healthier foods higher up the menu; and calling on celebrities such as sports stars to promote healthier food choices. Full consultation details are on the FSA website at www.food standards.gov.uk. All comments and views should be sent to Lorna Chadney, Food Labelling and Standards Division, Room 115c, Aviation House, 125 Kingsway, London WC2B 6NH or e-mail promokidsfood@foodstandards.gsi.gov.uk. The consultation ends on 21 June.
