Ed Balls appoints new team at Haringey

Children's minister Ed Balls has appointed a new leadership and management team at Haringey children's services, following a 'damning' investigation into the council's handling of child abuse cases after the death of Baby P.

Shortly before Mr Balls' announcement on Monday, council leader GeorgeMeehan and cabinet member for children Liz Santry resigned from theirposts. Sharon Shoesmith, director of children's services, was removedfrom her position. Mr Balls asked Ofsted, the Healthcare Commission andthe Chief Inspector of the Constabulary to carry out an urgentinspection of safeguarding in Haringey after he received a Serious Casereview into the death of Baby P on 12 November.
