MPs and Ed Balls argue over new children's commissioner

The appointment of the next children's commissioner erupted in a row after MPs questioned the nomination of Maggie Atkinson by children's secretary Ed Balls.

The education select committee said that they could not endorse the appointment because they felt Ms Atkinson had not shown enough determination to assert the independence of the role.
