Education minister welcomed

Children in Scotland has warmly welcomed the appointment of Cathy Jamieson as Scotland's minister for education and young people, calling her a 'champion for children'. Kay Tisdall, Children in Scotland's director of policy and research, said that Ms Jamieson had taken a lead in calling for a children's commissioner for Scotland and hoped she would continue the campaign in her ministerial position. Ms Tisdall also said the renaming of Ms Jamieson's post to include the phrase 'young people' was a positive step.

Ms Tisdall also said the renaming of Ms Jamieson's post to include the phrase 'young people' was a positive step.

'Cathy has a background of listening to children and young people and taking account of their views. Her appointment is excellent news for organisations like ours, and, of course, for children and young people across Scotland,' Ms Tisdall said.

Some commentators saw the appointment of a backbencher to one of the most important posts in the Cabinet as an unexpected act of political risk-taking by new First Minister Jack McConnell. However, Ms Jamieson is experienced in children's issues. She is convenor of the cross-party parliamentary group on children and young people and was formerly principal officer of Who Cares? Scotland, the advocacy service for young people in care.
