Feeling special

Children can be part of their class and receive individually tailored attention too. Rosalyn Spencer explains how Nurture Groups (NGs) are based within mainstream settings and cater for up to 12 children aged four to seven who have emotional and behavioural problems.

Nurture Groups (NGs) are based within mainstream settings and cater for up to 12 children aged four to seven who have emotional and behavioural problems.

Each group is staffed by two specially trained adults, usually a teacher and a teaching assistant, in a comfortable room that resembles part classroom and part home. Staff model appropriate behaviour and plan carefully for the social and emotional development of the individual children. The quality of the relationships within the whole group, and with the parents and carers of the children, is key to each group's success.

Children spend between six months and 18 months in the NG. During the duration of their placement in the NG they maintain regular contact with their own classmates by spending the beginning and end of each day in their own classes and also joining them for PE, assemblies, trips and any other special events.
