* Share the pull-out story 'Happy Birthday' with the children, using props such as a birthday card from mummy and daddy and 'feelings' puppets - these can be bought (see Resources, p16) or easily made by drawing facial expressions on to cardboard discs and attaching them to lolly sticks.
* Encourage children to relate the story to their own experiences and to talk about how they celebrate their birthdays.
* Focus further discussion on how people sent Sally their birthday greetings.
* Compare the different systems of communication and the benefits of each.
For example, you can have a conversation on the telephone, but you can keep a birthday card forever.
