The Social Toddler: promoting positive behaviour, By Helen and Clive Dorman (The Children's Project, 15.99, 020 8546 8750)

Reviewed by Jennie Lindon, early years consultant The Children's Project has set a high standard in publishing practical and sympathetic books to support parents and promote thoughtful practice for childcarers.

This is a generously illustrated and clearly presented book. It is full of wise advice about communication by words and body language with very young children. Full page 'picture stories' show the flow of exchanges between adults and toddlers. The descriptive text highlights ways to react constructively to normal situations.

There is a sensible acknowledgement that the best adults will make mistakes, some of which can be caught and righted. The different sections of the book will help readers to hold realistic expectations on areas of development such as attention span and the 'into everything' quality of very young children.
