Forced to live beyond our means

I must confess to being a little put out by Tralee Perkins' comments about pay (Letters, 13 June). I have been working with children all my life. While I knew there was no money in it, at least I expected to earn enough to live on. Having my heart melted neither pays the bills nor keeps a roof over my head. I'm a single man living in the south-east of England and have no partner to share the costs of life with or who can act as the main breadwinner. There's no way I could raise a family on what I earn. I am sure single women carers are in much the same position as me.

I worked hard to gain my NNEB and since then I have undertaken a BA degree.
