Nursery World - Fruits of the forest

It was so refreshing to read Jennie Lindon's article (Free range, 19 April) and we were pleased that she highlighted the work of Bridgwater College Children's Centre and Forest School. Bridgwater College has pioneered the forest school concept in the UK for 14 years. Its philosophy of boosting children's independence and confidence under- lies every aspect of our centre. Children have access to outdoor play all day and in all weathers and are permitted to take risks and explore their environment under the watchful eye of skilled, experienced practitioners. In addition, children as young as three (now including a nurture group of rising-threes!) go to their own forest school woodlands in regular weekly sessions where they undertake practical outdoor activities and are guided in their 'se of tools and equipment. The children grow tremendously in confidence and have a heightened sense of emotional well-being.
