Fifty years ago, amid parenting advice, the latest nursery products, recipes and clothing patterns, the editor of Nursery World expressed her 'deepest sympathy' at the King's death and looked ahead to the reign of the new Queen.

'The news of the King's death last week brought a sense of grief and personal loss to millions of people in a way that can never have occurred before, even at the passing of the famous monarchs who have impressed their name and character upon a much longer period than his short but eventful reign of 15 years,' she wrote.

'They saw in his family a symbol of all the families which make up the British Commonwealth, and as the two young princesses grew up many people felt affectionately that they shared in the joys, anxieties and thankful pride which the King and Queen must feel in watching and guiding the progress of their daughters.'
